I hate to say it but Calypso and I have been struggling lately.

Every single night she paces back and forth incessantly at the bottom of her cage. I know she wants out but I can’t have her roaming all night without supervision. Her pacing keeps me up and I swear I’ve sat for hours and she just won’t stop.

It gets worse if I’m out of her line of sight or I turn the light off. She’ll pace, and pace, and cling to the side of the door and beat her wings FRANTICALLY and when she’s tired herself out, she’ll sit up on her ledge and go ‘woo’ in this weird way that increases pitch with each breath and it drives my anxiety through the roof for some reason. She’ll eventually exhaust herself and sleep, but if she hears me at all she’ll start the wooing and she starts it all up again the second the sun comes up.

What am I doing wrong?? Nothing I do calms her and she seems stressed, I know I’m stressed, and I’m losing so much sleep over this

Lol Roo has similar behaviors. I don’t know if Calypso would react exactly the same, this is only based off my experience with Roo, but it may be helpful.

I’ve found that covering the cage can help. If they can’t see you they may be more likely to calm down. Although while it seems to discourage pacing (which I personally find more annoying), it encourages vocalization. “I can’t see you so I don’t know if I should pace, I will yell for you instead!” So it’s kind of a…take your pick between pacing and cooing kind of deal.

It can help if you communicate with her, for example when I’m about to put Roo to bed I say “It’s bedtime, time to go into your cage”, she knows what it means, and I think that helps her deal with being stuck in there at night. Now when I put her to bed she’ll calm down pretty quickly unless I turn the lights on and look awake lol.

It’s a learning process. Just stick with it and eventually she’ll learn to calm down. Young/new animals tend to be Pretty annoying at first as they learn how live and cooperate with us, I kind of see it as an initiation process haha

dealt with it with cats...dogs...now pigeons....all young animals are the same by the same i mean annoying for a period of time
